GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE CONCEPT OF LIBRARY
The word ‘library’ is derived from the Latin word ‘liber’ which means ‘a book’. Library is a place where books are kept for reading, study or reference.’ Libraries are now regarded as “service institutions.” “Use of books” and “service to the readers” is the cardinal principals followed in libraries. Libraries encourage and promote reading habit in the minds of young children. They are helping reading for education, reading for information, reading for entertainment, life – long education etc. There are five laws of library science:-
- Books are for use
- Every reader his or her book
- Every book its reader
- Save the time of the reader
- Library is a growing organism.
These five laws permeate into all aspects of library and library techniques – book selection, classification, cataloguing, reference service, administration, organization and every area.
